Olivewood figurines, nativities, ornaments and many more crafts have become a staple of the Bethlehem and surrounding areas craft scene. The craft has a simple beginning, originating from the olive trees, one of the most bountiful tree of the region. From there the artisans cut the logs and branches into workable pieces of wood to hand-carve into figurines, ornaments and so many other crafts. This craft passed down from generation to generation is the livelihood for a majority of families in Bethlehem. While modern machines have made parts of the process easier, the crafts still exhibit the beautiful art of wood carving.
